It’s What You Do That Matters

Thinking is important but if you want to change the result then what you do is far more important.

The biggest result that most business owners will admit to wanting to achieve is getting more customers.

So what they do is jump in and start spending (and potentially wasting) money on marketing to get leads or find customers to get people to walk through their door to buy their stuff.

But rarely does it work as well as they expected it to. Why?

The simple answer is you are trying to sell to the wrong people!

The result does not make you happy. You beat yourself up and think that your business is not good enough.

So make a small change to what you do.

You know that to get more customers you need to put your offer, whether it is a physical product, a service or an experience in front of people who are looking for that item.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, you may have relied on face to face contact, word of mouth, a fancy window display, or public speaking to attract people to your business, but those processes are not working as well as they used to for obvious reasons.

So you need to change how you get in front of your potential customers.

And before you do that, you need to do something that you may never have done before and that is DO some THINKING.

DO This: think about these three things and then answer the questions. 5 minutes each. (write notes)

  1. Think about your customer.
  2. Think about your product, service or experience.
  3. Think about why anyone would buy from you.

DO This: Now answer these three questions. (Write out in full)

  1. Who is your potential customer? Consider what is going on in their life, what problems they are trying to fix, what they want to achieve?
  2. What does your product, service or experience do to serve your potential customer? Consider what your product does for them, how it makes them feel, how it solves their problem or helps them achieve their ambition?
  3. Why is your product, service or experience special? Consider what distinguishes your offering from someone else’s? What makes your offer the right one for them?

Having DONE this,  you can create a new message that speaks directly to the people that will benefit from exactly what your product, service or experience will do for them. Even if you do more of your shotgun approach to marketing, because your message is clearer, you will get noticed by more people.

Better still seek out your potential customer. Work out where and how you can get in front of them. If you don’t yet have a CRM system, an email list, then start creating one! Get smart with Facebook ads. Learn Google ads. Post a blog on your website and share it on LinkedIn and Facebook. Ask people to take action to confirm you are speaking to the right people. Repeat! Repeat! Repeat!

You have to talk to the right people, people who are looking for what you can give them.
