If you don’t have a plan you don’t know how the hurricane will change your day, you just keep doing the next thing that is in front of you.

You know that feeling of arriving somewhere and not knowing what to do next.  You just do the first thing that shows up, which has probably nothing to do with the outcome you want.

A storm can happen anytime. Our lives are always uncertain because we have never been able to predict the future with certainty. When does anything go entirely to plan? Every day we have a list of things we want to do but how often do we end the day and know that we have achieved everything we set out to achieve? Well, ok, once in a blue moon, and it feels great. But how often really?

When we know what we want to achieve, however, we can always adapt to the circumstances and make it happen. You may choose a different route or approach, or you may just change the timescale. When you know the outcome you want to achieve, you can adjust the process to overcome the hurdles thrown at you.

The work of sailing is not when you are out there winning the race; it is the preparation time you spend on rigging the boat. You are witnessing the result when you see someone cross the line, receive an award, close the deal or make lots of money. It is the outcome of their hard and consistent work, their tedious and often dull attention to detail that led them to that brief moment of brilliance. If you want to be successful, you have to be clear about the outcome you wish to achieve, BUT, you have to be passionate about the tedious process to get there.

Even a good weather forecast can’t predict how the storm will change your life; you are in charge of that. Storms will come, and they will pass, it is not the storm that determines if you will succeed or fail. You are the master of your destiny and the leader of your life. You have extraordinary powers to overcome any obstacle put in your way if you can learn to focus on the next baby step that will take you towards your chosen outcome.
