How Much Time do You Need?

I was speaking with a business owner this week about what they need to do to make their business work and they reminded me about the time question.
And time is the one thing that does not change, it passes at a constant speed and we don’t know how much of it we will get.
So why worry about time?
Time becomes important when we have something we want to do or must complete. Then we get very intimately engaged in how much time is left. That deadline, a promise made, the wait before a long-awaited event.
Without that marker in the sand, we wait until we get around to it!
Do you ever ask yourself “how long have you got to make your business work for you?”
Which brings to mind the question… “what would your business be like if it worked for you?”
For too many there is no urgency and they are happy to work hard at their business, it pays enough, it works enough, I am happy enough.
For others, their mind is on the exit. What will I do at the end of work my working career? Will I have enough of a pension? What will I do with my time? Will I be able to sell my business? How can I make my business an asset with selling?
How much time have you got?
What contribution does your business have to make to you, for you to say that it is working? Is it just financial or are there other elements that you want your business to provide for you?
When do you want that desired contribution to be made?
If you want your business to make the right contribution to you, your life and your sense of fulfilment, don’t wait to get around to it, start building a business that works for you today! Your first thought might be overwhelm or panic. Given all of the worldly pressures on our lives right now, that is understandable. Instead of thinking of the challenge as a whole what is needed is a plan. A plan of many baby steps to take in one focused direction. Each step leading to the next that will inevitably bring you to your goal.
If you want to create a business that has a value at the sale, that can run without you being there all the time or could be passed to the next generation, it needs the right foundations, the right structure and the right way of operating. If I asked you what could you achieve in a week you would overestimate your ability. If I asked you what you could achieve in a year you would underestimate the outcome. That is the nature of human beings.
When you set challenging goals AND work out the baby steps that will get you there, you will overachieve without the sense of overwhelm or panic.
You just need a plan and the courage to follow it.
You have the time. You just have to use your time to the best effect.
